The Best Harness for Your Poodle: Sizing, Fit and Comfort

The poodle was bred as a water retriever, and it shows — a strong swimmer, tireless on a long walk, and one of the sharpest minds of any breed.

It also comes in three sizes, which is where most harness advice falls down. A Toy weighs a few kilos. A Standard can weigh thirty. The same harness cannot sensibly be right for both.

So here is how the sizing works — though whichever harness you choose, measuring your own dog matters more than any weight guide, because two poodles of the same weight can measure quite differently.

Why a Harness Suits a Poodle

A harness spreads the pull of the leash across the chest and shoulders rather than gathering it at the neck. On the smaller varieties, whose necks are fine-boned and slight, that distribution makes for a steadier, more comfortable walk.

None of which rules out a collar. A well-fitted collar on a poodle who walks calmly is a perfectly good arrangement, and there are larger Standards for whom it is the better one. The harness is the right answer more often, not the only answer.

There is also the coat to consider. A poodle's coat grows rather than sheds, which is part of why the breed suits allergy-prone households, and it means the coat sits against a harness differently than a flat-coated dog's does. A coarse or textured strap works tangles into it over time; a smooth one does not. All three of our harnesses are made with this in mind.

Our Three Harnesses, and How Each Is Measured

They are built differently, so they are measured differently. Take the measurement that matches the one you are considering.

Mario is a step-in harness. Your poodle steps into it and you close it, so nothing passes over the head — which small dogs tend to prefer. It is a fixed shape rather than an adjustable one, so the fit comes from choosing the right size. One measurement: the girth at the base of the neck, just in front of the front legs, where the harness sits once closed. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Gabriele is an H-shape. Two loops joined along the back, one at the neck and one around the ribcage, each with its own buckle. Two measurements, neck and chest, set independently. That is why it copes well with a dog whose proportions do not match a standard chart. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Franco is a Y-shape. The chest strap forms a Y at the front, resting on the breastbone and leaving the throat clear entirely. It is made from striped cotton ribbon with natural leather ends and is fully adjustable through sliders and a side buckle. It is built for medium and larger dogs, so for poodles it comes into play at the Standard size. Two measurements, neck and chest. Because the adjustment range is generous, take the smaller size when you fall between two.

For any of them, measure snugly with a soft tape and leave room for two fingers between the tape and the coat. Take the measurement when the coat is at a normal length rather than immediately after a clip, since a fuller coat occupies more room.

Franco begins at a 38 cm neck, so it is made for medium and larger dogs. For a poodle, that means a Standard.

The Best Harness for a Toy Poodle

The Toy is the smallest of the three — two to four kilos.

Size 1 of the Mario starts at 31 cm, the smallest harness we make, and its step-in design suits a small dog who would rather not have anything lifted over their ears. It comes in six colours, from lazy taupe through to tangerine orange.

The Gabriele in XS is the alternative, covering a 24–30 cm neck and a 35–43 cm chest. It is the more adjustable of the two, which helps if your Toy is long in the body or narrow through the chest.

A Toy is small enough that the margins matter, so measure the base of the neck before choosing between them — and Franco, built for larger dogs, is not one we would recommend at this size.

The Best Harness for a Miniature Poodle

Five to eight kilos, and the size both leather harnesses were built around. This is where you have a real choice.

Mario covers this range across sizes 2 to 4. It is the quicker of the two to put on, which counts for something when you are heading out twice a day.

Gabriele in S or M gives the more precise fit. The two independent buckles let you set the neck and the chest separately, which matters on a dog whose proportions do not follow a standard chart. Most Miniatures' do not — which is exactly why measuring both neck and chest, rather than going by weight, is worth the minute it takes.

The Best Harness for a Standard Poodle

A Standard can stand over 45 cm at the shoulder and weigh up to 30 kg, with a deep chest and, often, a fine-boned frame. This is the size with the most choice, and the one where measuring matters most.

Gabriele runs to L (41–49 cm neck, 57–65 cm chest) and XL (49–57 cm neck, 65–73 cm chest), which fits a smaller or finer-boned Standard well. The H-shape distributes pressure evenly and leaves the shoulders free to move.

Franco in S is the answer for a larger Standard, and for an active one it may be the better choice. The Y-shape rests on the breastbone and leaves the throat clear, which suits a dog with real drive behind them, and the adjustable sliders let you tune the fit as the coat grows out between grooms. It comes in green or blue stripes, with natural leather ends that darken with use.

Which Harness

Where more than one fits, the choice comes down to what you want from it.

Mario is the everyday harness: step in, close it, go. Light, quick, and in the brightest colours of the three.

Gabriele is the most formal, with two adjustable buckles and contrast stitching, in saddle brown, corvine blue, cherry or noir. It takes a moment longer to fit and holds that fit most precisely.

Franco is the most casual and the most adjustable, in striped cotton ribbon with untreated leather ends and silver hardware. It is also the one that changes most with wear, as the leather darkens over time.

Mario and Gabriele are handmade in Italy from smooth nappa leather. Franco is made in Italy from Italian cotton ribbon and natural leather. All three have a matching leash.

Leashes

Each harness pairs with a leash from the same collection.

The Gabriele adjustable leash extends to 240 cm and can be worn across the body, which is useful on a longer walk or when you would rather have your hands free.

The Franco leash runs to 265 cm with multiple fastening rings, so it can be worn crossbody or held conventionally, and shortened or lengthened as you go.

The Ferdinando braided leash is the heaviest and most traditional, in braided nappa with the same hardware as its collar. It suits a Standard at the larger end.

Collars

A collar earns its place even if your poodle walks in a harness, if only to carry an identification tag.

The Ferdinando braided collar is made from braided nappa leather with a rounded profile. That shape is deliberate: a rounded collar sits more softly against a coat than a flat one and is less likely to press a line into it, which on a poodle's coat is worth something. It runs from the smallest sizes up to a 50 cm neck and looks the part on a full-grown Standard. It can be engraved with your dog's name or a telephone number.

A Note on Coats

A poodle's coat grows continuously rather than shedding, which is why the breed suits allergy-prone households and why it needs regular grooming. Where a harness sits, it is worth brushing underneath the straps as part of that routine, since that is where tangles tend to start.

Smooth nappa leather helps here. It softens with wear and gradually takes the shape of the dog, and it does not grip the coat the way a textured strap does. On a curly coat, that matters more than it does on most breeds.

The coat also changes what you measure. A poodle measured the week after a clip and the week before the next one can be a centimetre or two apart, so take the measurement somewhere in between if you can. This is one of the quiet advantages of an adjustable harness: the Gabriele and the Franco can both be let out or taken in as the coat grows, without changing size.

Is a harness better than a collar for a poodle?
